With others, we often perform better on simple or well-rehearsed tasks and see our audience as competitors. Conversely, we tend to perform better on complex or new tasks while alone. Studies support that the presence of a passive audience facilitates effective completion of a simpler task and inhibits completion of a more difficult task due to psychological pressure and stress (Hill).
