When choosing between two alternatives, the addition of a third, less attractive option (the decoy) can influence the perception of the original choices. Decoys are “asymmetrically dominated”, meaning they are completely inferior to one option (the target) but only partially inferior to the other (the competitor). Because of this, the decoy effect is sometimes referred to as the “asymmetric dominance effect.”
