A mental shortcut used to make quick decisions, often relying heavily upon our current emotional state, rather than taking time to consider the long-term ramifications of a decision. Positive emotional responses yield a high benefit, low risk perception, while negative emotional responses have the opposite effect (Fischhoff et al. 1978).
