We just don’t “get” numbers–they speak to our System 2 brains. Because of this, people are generally bad at grasping the size of problems. For example, in philanthropic donations, the number of lives saved– referred to as the scope of the altruistic action– has marginal effects on the donor’s willingness to pay.
